Karthun is coming!

===Transmission Lines Open===

So I need a place to post my work and hopefully get critiques on said work.

For those not in the know web comic author and all around amazing creator Brian Patterson (@d20Monkey) and his writing partner on this project Tracy Barnett (@TheOtherTracy) have been hard at work on writing and finishing the Karthun Campaign setting. Karthun is the fictional world where almost all the D&D-esque gaming that goes on in Brian Patterson’s web comic www.d20monkey.com enough of us bozos wanted him to work on publishing this setting that we dropped our gamer cash for a Karthun Kickstater, and low and behold we helped get the project funded and as of this writing the books will be shipping soon!

So what does this all mean? Well the Campaign book is system neutral. Which means while it has a heavy D&D influence you can take the information presented and with some work plug it into any RPG rules set. Now as part of the Kickstarter, there is a GM’s Guide coming as a stretch goal that will have rules written for plugging it into your favorite setting. I believe the list was as follows: D&D 5th Edition, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, Fate, 13th Age. All of which I am super excited for.

However I wanted to take a stab at some of the D&D 5th Edition stuff. So I present you with my first draft pass on the Illyn, the Childern of Seasons. A lot of folk recommend the Genasi, however they are too tied to their elemental heritage so I felt they needed to be designed from scratch. Now I looked to the Tiefling and the Aasimar as presented in the Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide respectively as my base inspiration:

Illyn, Children of Seasons –

All Illyn share the following common characteristics.

Ability Score Increase. Your constitution score increases by 2. This is due in fact to the each Illyn’s heartstone, which makes them heartier then other races.

Age. Illyn mature at the same rate as humans and reach adulthood in their late teens. They do however live longer than humans. Up to 200 years, about double that of humans. (This is an assumption)

Alignment. Due to their connection with nature and the turning of the seasons the Illyn tend to gravitate to the chaotic alignment.

Size. Illyn typically range in size similar to humans. However their seasonal connection can sometimes affect this. Children of Winter for example tend to be leaner and more gaunt than say a Child of Summer. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base Walking speed is 30ft.

Children of Elinar. The Illyn due to the nature of their creation, have been spared the from the curse of undeath. This is primarily because of their heartstones. When an Illyn dies they are protected as if by the spell gentle repose, with the duration equal to their character level multiplied by 10. In addition due to the preservation of their soul within the Heartsone they cannot be raised as undead.

Languages. Common, Illynese

Subrace. As the children of Elinar, the Illyn are a race tied to the seasons of Karthun. From the renewal of spring, the warmth of summer, the passing of life in autumn, and the cold end of winter, the seasons course through the Illyn’s veins. For this reason, Illyn are referred to by the season in which they’re born: Child of Winter, Child of Spring, Child of Summer, and Child of Autumn.

Spring: Children of Spring typically have red hair and pale green birthmarks, to signify growth and life.

Ability Score Increase. Children of Spring get to add +1 to the Charisma Score.

Fleet of Foot. Your Base Walking Speed becomes 35.

Springs Blessing. You know the Thorn Whip Cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast Cure Wounds spell once with this trait as a 2nd Level spell, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Once you reach 5th level, you can cast Plant Growth spell once with this trait as a 3rd level spell, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Springs Resilience. You have resistance to Poison damage.

Summer: Children of Summer typically have blonde hair and gold birthmarks in reverence of the sun.

Ability Score Increase. Children of Summer get to add +1 to their Dexterity Scores.

Fleet of Foot. Your Base Walking Speed becomes 35.

Summers Blessing. You know the Produce Flame Cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast Heat Metal spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Once you reach 5th level, you can cast Plant Growth spell once with this trait as a 3rd level spell, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Endure Summers Heat. You have resistance to Fire Damage.

Autumn: Children of Autumn typically have brown hair and auburn birthmarks to signify the changing of seasons.

Ability Score Increase. Children of Autumn get to add +1 to their Wisdom Scores.

Autumns’ Stride. You ignore the movement penalty for difficult terrain in rural areas.(woods, mountains, etc.)

Autumns’ Wisdom. You know the Guidance Cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast Pass without Trace spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Once you reach 5th level, you can cast Dispel Magic spell once with this trait as a 3rd level spell, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Wisdom is your spell casting ability for these spells.

Autumn’s Resistance. You have resistance to Thunder Damage.

Winter: Children of Winter typically have dark hair and blue-grey birthmarks to mark the arrival of winter.

Ability Score Increase. Children of Winter get to add +1 to their Intelligence Scores.

Winter’s Translocation. The world around you freezes for just a moment allowing you to seemingly disappear and reappear nearby. You can cast Misty Step spell once using this trait. You regain the ability to do so when you finish a short or long rest.

Grasp of Winter. You know the Ray of Frost Cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast Hold Person spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Once you reach 5th level, you can cast Slow spell once with this trait as a 3rd level spell, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Intelligence is your spell casting ability for these spells. These spell effects carry a frozen/icy motif i.e. Hold Person would freeze the person in place.

Cloak of Winter. You have resistance to Cold Damage.

Anyway this is my first pass at the Illyn. Overall I like it however I know I need to make some refinements and changes.

Next up I am working on the 3 Elven clans that populate Karthun. They aren’t Tolkien Elves, they aren’t Keebler Elves, and they aren’t your typical Fantasy Elves either. So I felt they needed an update to match their Karthun origins as well.

As always I’d welcome any feed back.

Below are a few links to check out if you want to know more about Brian and Tracy. Seriously they both rock some great gaming content.
